Load Rating & Capacity Certification Services in Ontario

HITE Engineering provides load rating and capacity certification support for Ontario clients that need to verify or document equipment and structural load rating capacity.
Depending on the project, our engineers may use drawings, calculations, inspections, load testing, or finite element analysis (FEA) to assess capacity.

What Is Load Rating and Capacity Certification?

Load rating determines or verifies the rated capacity of equipment, a structure, or a system for defined loading conditions and intended use. Capacity certification provides engineering documentation of the assessed capacity, including applicable conditions and limitations.

Depending on the equipment and project, the engineering review may consider:
  • Equipment or structural drawings
  • Materials and dimensions
  • Connections and fabrication details
  • Intended loading conditions
  • Existing capacity ratings or markings
  • Equipment condition
  • Engineering calculations
  • Inspection findings
  • Load testing where applicable
  • Finite element analysis (FEA) where additional stress or deflection analysis is required
The appropriate method depends on what is being assessed, its condition, available documentation, how it will be used, and the capacity that needs to be established.

Load Rating vs Product Certification vs FEA

Load rating can overlap with product testing, FEA, and equipment or structural design, but these services address different engineering needs.

Some projects may require multiple services, such as FEA for more complex load or stress conditions. HITE can determine the appropriate engineering approach based on the project requirements.

What HITE Reviews

Every project is specific to the asset and its intended use, with a load rating engineer assessing the requirements for equipment or structural capacity.
Depending on the project, HITE may review:
  • Existing drawings and specifications
  • Equipment dimensions and geometry
  • Site and operating conditions
  • Existing capacity labels or markings
  • Material specifications
  • Fabrication details
  • Welds, fasteners, connections, and supports where applicable
  • Intended loading conditions
  • Load direction and distribution
  • Existing modifications
  • Inspection findings
  • Engineering calculations
  • FEA where applicable
  • Load testing requirements where applicable
  • Applicable codes, standards, and engineering requirements
  • Existing documentation or previous engineering assessments
The goal is to understand how the equipment or structure carries the intended loads and determine what engineering analysis and documentation are required to establish or verify its capacity.

When You May Need Load Rating or Capacity Certification

A load capacity assessment may be appropriate when equipment or a structure lacks clear capacity documentation, has been modified, or will be used under different loading conditions.
Depending on the application, clients may require a load rating engineer to complete a P.Eng. load rating or equipment capacity certification for:
  • Custom equipment
  • Modified equipment
  • Equipment without clear capacity documentation
  • Structural frames or platforms
  • Lifting or support equipment
  • Existing equipment being repurposed
  • Client or tender requirements
  • Insurance requirements
  • Safety audits
  • Changes to loading conditions
  • Equipment being evaluated before continued or new use
Where lifting equipment is involved, additional engineering or regulatory considerations may apply. For lifting devices used in industrial establishments, Ontario Regulation 851 requires the device to be examined by a competent person to determine its capability of handling the maximum load as rated. The device must also be plainly marked with sufficient information for the operator to determine its maximum rated load.

HITE can provide engineering assessment and documentation where capacity verification or rating is required. HITE also provides engineering support for cranes and elevating work platforms and lifting device PSR/PHSR requirements.

Our Process

HITE follows a structured engineering review process based on the equipment, available documentation, intended use, and required capacity.
01
Step 1

Project Scoping and Information Review

We review available drawings, photos, dimensions, material information, existing ratings, and loading requirements to establish the scope.
02
Step 2

Inspection Where Required

A site or equipment inspection may be required to verify dimensions, fabrication details, condition, or modifications.
03
Step 3

Engineering Analysis

Our engineers assess loading conditions using calculations, component review, and FEA where required for complex stress or deflection analysis.
04
Step 4

Capacity Determination

HITE determines the supported capacity and identifies relevant conditions, limitations, deficiencies, or additional testing requirements.
05
Step 5

Documentation and Follow-Up

HITE provides the applicable engineering documentation and, where needed, recommendations or structural and mechanical design support.

What You Receive

Deliverables depend on the type of equipment or structure, available documentation, required capacity, assessment method, and project scope.
A load rating or capacity certification project may include:
  • Engineering assessment
  • Equipment or structural capacity review
  • Engineering calculations
  • Inspection notes where applicable
  • Load rating documentation
  • Capacity documentation
  • FEA results where applicable
  • Load testing requirements where applicable
  • Identified conditions or limitations
  • Recommendations for deficiencies
  • Recommendations for required modifications
  • Signed and sealed engineering report where applicable
  • Follow-up engineering support
The final documentation is based on the conditions and information reviewed as part of the engineering assessment.

FAQs

The method depends on the equipment or structure being assessed, its intended use, available documentation, materials, geometry, condition, and loading requirements.

An engineering assessment may include review of drawings, dimensions and material information, inspection, engineering calculations, FEA, or load testing requirements where applicable.

HITE determines the appropriate assessment approach after reviewing the available project information.

Not every initial review requires a site visit. Whether an inspection is required depends on the equipment, available drawings and documentation, existing condition, modifications, and information needed to complete the engineering assessment.

Where existing documentation is incomplete or site conditions need to be verified, an inspection may be required.

HITE can provide engineering assessment and capacity certification support for custom equipment where the equipment, loading conditions, materials, fabrication details, and other information required for the assessment can be appropriately evaluated.

The exact scope depends on the equipment and applicable engineering requirements.

Where the assessment results in a final engineering report, drawing or other engineering document, the applicable final documents are signed, dated and sealed by the responsible licensed Professional Engineer in accordance with Ontario professional engineering requirements.

Finite element analysis may be appropriate when the equipment or structure has complex geometry, loading, connections, or stress conditions that require more detailed analysis.

Not every load rating requires FEA. HITE determines the appropriate analysis method based on the equipment and assessment requirements.

The timeline depends on the complexity of the equipment or structure, available documentation, whether an inspection is required, the engineering analysis involved, and whether additional information, testing, or modifications are needed.

Providing photos, drawings, dimensions, material information, required capacity, and project timelines at the start can help HITE assess the scope and expected schedule.
